Molds and other fungi in indoor environments: Summary of biology, known health effects and references

چکیده
Absidia Absidia is one of the pin molds (zygomycetes) that is frequently found in soil and plant debris (Ellis 1994, Zycha et al. 1969). They produce structures (sporangia) filled with sticky spores under relatively moist conditions. It is also known in indoor environments from air and surface samples. No species are known to produce mycotoxins. A. corymbifera is a well-known agent of zygomycosis, an opportunistic human infection (Ellis 1994, Rippon 1988).

Mycotoxins and Indoor Molds
With a growing awareness of the potential hazards of chemical and biological agents in our homes, schools and workplaces, a greater emphasis has been placed on evaluating the role of mycotoxins and mycotoxin-producing fungi in our indoor environments. Now, more then ever, the potential health effects of airborne molds and other biological contaminants are being given serious consideration in IA...
متن کاملHealth effects of mycotoxins in indoor air: a critical review.
Industrial hygienists (IHs) are called upon to investigate exposures to mold in indoor environments, both residential and commercial. Because exposure standards for molds or mycotoxins do not exist, it is important for the industrial hygienist to have a broad knowledge of the potential for exposure and health effects associated with mold in the indoor environment. This review focuses on the tox...

Background and Purpose: Fungal contamination in damp places in buildings has become an increasing problem worldwide. Dampness facilitates the growth of fungi, which can cause adverse effects not only on the buildings but also on their occupants. The aim of this study was to identify indoor mold species in the buildings of Kerman province, Iran. Materials and Methods: In this study, 110 samples...
متن کاملAdverse Human Health Effects Associated with Molds in the Indoor Environment
The fungi are eukaryotic, unicellular, or multicellular organisms that, because they lack chlorophyll, are dependent upon external food sources. Fungi are ubiquitous in all environments and play a vital role in the Earth's ecology by decomposing organic matter. Familiar fungi include yeasts, rusts, smuts, mushrooms, puffballs, and bracket fungi. Many species of fungi live as commensal organisms...
متن کاملAspergillus species in indoor environments and their possible occupational and public health hazards
Abstract The genus Aspergillus, which consists of a few hundred opportunistic mold species found in various climatic conditions, causes diseases including localized infections, fatal diseases, allergic responses, and inhaled conidia in humans. Herein, we present an overview of the most common diseases and allergic infections caused by Aspergillus species and their associated health hazards ...
